Construction work zones are a safety challenge for motorists, pedestrians, and construction workers alike.
With increasing road construction in India, there is a corresponding increase in crashes and work zone fatalities. We’ve witnessed many construction work zones missing critical advance warning signs and traffic management devices designed to improve safety. When signage and delineation devices are used, too often they’re made of substandard reflective sheeting which is not effective in safely guiding motorists through work zones.
To promote work zone safety in India, we’re examining what challenges India faces and what solutions are available.
Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility. What standards exist for work zones?
Enforcement of IRC SP:55 - Work Zone Traffic Management Plan (WTMP) will improve the safety of motorists and construction workers. Unfortunately, implementation of these vital standards is lacking. Far too often, traffic control devices do not have proper reflective material to direct drivers at dawn, dusk and night. IRC SP:55 - Work Zone Traffic Management Plan (WTMP) includes specific guidelines for using retroreflective sheeting in work zones to improve safety and visibility. As an industry, it’s time to start adhering to, and enforcing this standard for the safety of everyone.
Without proper use of reflective sheeting, these traffic control devices disappear at night.
