Being an intern allows students and recent graduates to explore different industries and roles, and acquire diverse skills and experiences. Avery Dennison presented an opportunity I could not pass up after graduating from San Francisco State University with my bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Concentration in Marketing. For the past nine weeks, I have been interning with the Avery Dennison Corporate Communications team in Glendale, California.
On my first day, each team member offered a warm welcome, introducing me to various job functions within the department. I quickly began to feel like part of the team, exploring different areas of communications like content strategy, social media, employer branding and the structure of a corporate foundation.
I worked closely with Alex Moore, corporate communications manager, and Kristin Robinson, director, global corporate communications, to create internal blogs highlighting topics such as Avery Dennison’s community outreach and philanthropy, event recaps, and employee resource articles.
My favorite topics to write about were community outreach initiatives. It was inspiring and humbling to see Avery Dennison employee volunteerism around the world in action, supporting our communities, and then being able to share those stories not only with all our employees, but also with our external audience. Avery Dennison is an industry leader, and I really appreciated the opportunity to communicate about the values the company represents. These were clearly demonstrated at the Avery Dennison Global IT Leadership Summit in September. As a member of the planning committee, I was able to witness firsthand how committed Avery Dennison is to building and maintaining a culture of diversity and inclusion across its business units. It also helped me learn the inner workings of detailed and successful event planning.
I'm very thankful for my time at Avery Dennison. Everyone I met here has been nothing but kind, genuine and sincere about positively shaping my experience. From their strong commitment to sustainability to their active efforts supporting communities where employees live and work, Avery Dennison is a company I’ve grown to deeply admire and respect. The consistent encouragement and feedback I received allowed me to flourish, and I hope I was able to provide productive and helpful support to the entire team during my time here.
