A Day of Service, Good Food and New Friends in Mexico City

“Education is one of the core causes supported by the Avery Dennison Foundation. With its nutrition education work, Comedor Santa Maria is a great fit for our organization to support."

In June, a team of more than 30 Avery Dennison employees congregated at the Comedor Santa Maria dining hall in Mexico City, united by one mission: to help feed local children who come to the hall for meals every day. Whether preparing food in the kitchen, serving meals, or engaging with the children, all hands were enthusiastically on deck for a day of service.

Since its founding in 1995, Comedor Santa Maria has provided daily meals and nutrition education to more than 9,000 children across its 29 locations throughout Mexico. The Mexico City location alone regularly serves an estimated 500 mothers, and children ranging in age from four months to 16 years. While many local families rely on Comedor Santa Maria as their main source of food, the organization’s emphasis on nutrition education is equally important.

“Education is one of the core causes supported by the Avery Dennison Foundation.  With its nutrition education work, Comedor Santa Maria is a great fit for our organization to support,” explained Janet Sandoval, director CSR and the Avery Dennison Foundation. “During our visit, we looked for every opportunity to connect with the children, whether it was through playing games, singing songs or simply engaging in conversation. It’s so important to the staff and volunteers at Comedor Santa Maria that we demonstrate values and social skills with the children, because many of them do not receive this type of education at home,” she added.

The heart of the community

Avery Dennison volunteers witnessed first-hand how Comedor Santa Maria’s dining hall acts as a source of community for the children and families it serves.

"As a team member based in Mexico, I'm so proud of the growth and development we’re experiencing in this country with our colleagues,” said Miriam Corro, human resources generalist, Avery Dennison. “It's very important to help and support our communities in need. At Comedor Santa Maria, you could see the children’s needs and how our efforts were making a difference. To be a volunteer is to receive a smile in return."

The volunteer work undertaken at Comedor Santa Maria was the latest collaboration between the Avery Dennison Foundation and Fondo Unido (United Way), a partnership that demonstrates the Foundation’s mission to help communities where Avery Dennison employees live and work.
